Introduction: The game of Tic-Tac-Toe is known to almost everyone.  Small children love to play it because of its __________.   I hate it.  Why?  Because after you play awhile you realize you can’t win.

Conclusion: The story of two _______________. One who inwardly has sold out to sin but still plays the losing game.  One who admits failure and cries out for God’s Mercy.

James 2:1-9

Introduction: When we forget where we come from, we forget about the grace and mercy Jesus Christ applied (applies) to our life – “while we were yet sinners”

I. Sometimes great books don’t have great covers – vv 1-3

  • Gold rings showed who they were, but did not reveal who they were (Did you ever meet a “wannabee”?)
  • Vile raiment – (Humpty Dumpty people)

II. Its okay to come into the church door, but my door; that’s a different story – vv 4

  • Remember Jabez – enlarging our coast takes us out of our comfort range
  • Under the influence of improper thoughts – God sees the heart
  • Allow others to see our Humpty shell

III. God’s view of rich people is not the world’s view of rich people – vv. 5-9

  • Sure you can” – A missionary’s story
  • When we forget where we come from, we are blinded to who we have become.
  • It’s the royal law because it demands brokenness

Conclusion: God can only use broken people put back together by the power of the cross, the applied cover of His mercy, and the infusion of His grace.

II    The response of believers – vv 19

  • Hear His voice
  • Subdue our tongue and passion to obedience

III   The trouble with undisciplined passion – vv 20

  • When excited we choose wrong
  • Hard to embrace Truth when angry

IV    The right course of action – vv 21

  • Separate from offensive disgusting conduct
  • Overflowing of naughtiness in mind
  • Implanted Word becomes our nature when received fairly

Conclusion: Only God’s Word can save us from ourselves.

Often times when things go wrong in our lives or we make poor choices, our first reaction is to blame God.  In this episode Pastor Tom shows us that if we want to find the most common sources we should look at ourselves.

Introduction: When experiencing difficulty we have a tendency to blame God for our wrong choices.

I.      The absence of wrong in God – vv 13

  • No passion to be gratified
  • No power he does not have
  • No wealth that is not His
  • No happiness outside His possession
  • Genesis 3: 10-13

II.      The source of temptation: Man himself vv 14-15

  • Some lust, desire, inclination unsatisfied
  • Enticed means led away and seized
  • Lust births sin – scratching the itch
  • Death is traced to sin – temporary and eternal

III.      The source of blessings – vv 16-17

  • The danger in getting this wrong
  • God’s gifts are gracious and complete
  • Consistent

Conclusion:   God never changes in His desire to bless us with perfect gifts for the Giver is perfect.
